Making a Solar Energy Powered an iPhone Battery Charger

Image
The project was termed as Mighty Minty Boost as it was developed to function as iPod/iPhone charger with solar power. Aside from being small, it has a large battery capacity of 3.7V at 2000mAh and it accepts input power from 3.7V to 7V. As shown in the images below, it can become a compact USB power supply when the solar cell is removed after charging. The Velcro is used to secure the Mighty Minty Boost inside a backpack or messenger bag after unplugging the solar cell. For faster charging, a larger solar cell can be attached to the bag. Enough power can be generated to fully charge an iPhone in about 5.5 hours and an iPod Touch in 4 hours using a slightly larger solar cell with 6V at 250mAh. The charger will automatically switch to trickle charging when the cell reaches full charge. The charging current is limited to 100mA when charging using the mini USB port and the charging is limited to 280mA when charging using the barrel plug jack . The materials needed to build the charger incl...

Making High Quality iPod iPhone Speakers

Image
This high quality and low cost speaker was designed to be used for iPod or iPhone with the use of old car Hi-Fi speaker and some computer components. Other materials used are shown in the image below and they include an amplifier, 240V-12V power supply, tweeters, crossovers, sealed lead acid battery, MDF, filler, Apple universal dock & remote, glue, nails, and white gloss paint. The front baffle board was drawn on a piece of MDF in order to use it as a template to make the rear of the box. The dimensions of the box based on the speaker do not necessarily need to be exact because the speakers were quite old as it comes from an old Renault 19. From the photo of the round bits below, the trusty circular saw was used to cut loads of 1 inch by 15 cm strips of MDF. Between the front and rear baffle, the strips were glued and nailed. The baffles were cut out using a jigsaw and the strips were kept as close to each other as possible. The first coat of filler can take 3 batches to finish an...

iPhone trade in program launched Great Apple

Image
Apple Inc. has started an iPhone trade-in program in its stores, letting owners sell older handsets back to the company in exchange for credit toward a new model.  Apple’s U.S. retail outlets are now accepting devices, said Amy Bessette, a spokeswoman for Apple. The initiative is starting just before the next iPhone’s debut on Sept. 10. While Gazelle Inc. and wireless carriers such as Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc. already buy used handsets, this is the first program run by the iPhone maker at its stores. By buying old phones, they’re aiming to spur new device sales by helping cover the cost of buying the latest smartphone. Apple is teaming up with Brightstar Corp., a mobile-phone distributor, to run the operation, people with knowledge of the plans said in June. “IPhones hold great value so Apple Retail Stores are launching a new program to assist customers who wish to bring in their previous-generation iPhone for reuse or recycling,” Bessette said. “In addition to he...

Make Your Iphone Battery Last Longer

Image
I’ve owned a Iphone for a while now, it’s an amazing phone, the best I have ever used so far. But when I first started using it, my only concern was that the battery didn’t last as much as I expected. After two days, it was gone, and when I needed it, the phone just didn’t turn ON. I used to let the wireless on almost all the time and downloading many new apps. Now that I have some more experience on how my little gadget works, I will try to share some ideas on how you can optimize your iphone’s battery life and have a better iExperience. Wireless connectivity will drawn your battery even if you are not using it. Keeping it on, it will always try to connect to some open hot spot, try to check your emails and much more. So a good idea is to turn it on when using, and after, turn it off. Bluetooth have a similar battery usage as Wi-Fi, so there’s not much reason to leave it on if you are not using it (I believe that the most common usage for bluetooth today is the headsets and car kits)....

Controlling a Mazda Car Using an iPhone

Image
This hack illustrates how a car can be controlled from anywhere in the world by tapping into the disgnostic systems and onboard webserver of the car. The objective is to keep the car “live” and connected to the Internet 24×7 even when not being driven. It should run continuously without flattening the car battery by critically selecting a low-power computer. Also, the user should be able to start the engine, pop the trunk, lock/unlock, and view all vehicle diagnostics from his iPhone. The chosen car was a Mazda RX-8 as shown in the image below. It was released in 2004 and consists of 6-speed manual transmission with a 1.3L 13B-MSP RENESIS engine. The computer used in this hack is an Alix-1 which draws very little power but is fast enough to run a full Linux distribution system. To fit into a recess in the base of the RX-8 boot, a mounting frame was assembled. It has room to mount the Alix-1, a USB hub, a charge circuit, and a deep-cycle 28A/h sealed lead acid battery. The SLA battery i...

Purported press image of iPhone 5C appears online

Image
While the purported iPhone 5C, Apple's low-cost iPhone, has made several online appearances, including in some really high resolution pictures and videos that surfaced on the Internet, a website now claims to have published the official press shots of the phone. Aluminum iPhone 5 Coming Next Fall

Image
Sources have told BGR the iPhone 5 will indeed be a complete redesign, with an appearance much like the form factor of the iPad 2. The front glass of the next generation iPhone will be connected to an all-aluminum back via a rubberized bezel. The mockup below illustrates what the aluminum iPhone might look like. The bezel is said to be made of a similar material to the Apple Bumper cases. Not only would this bezel conceal a completely redesigned antenna system, it sounds like this would help make the iPhone 5 less slippery to hold. After all, the machined aluminum found on the iPad 2 is slick in more ways than one. BGR is confident the next iPhone will not see the light of day until next fall, which puts the release date approximately one year after the iPhone 4S launch. The days of a summer iPhone release seem to have fallen to the wayside for the time being. When it comes to the cellular antenna, using the rubberized bezel would permit Apple to configure the antenna without needing ...
